BRITISH spies flew to occupied France to smuggle out sacks of garlic after Free French forces told their English allies: “We can’t fight without it.” Operation Achilles was mounted by Churchill’s Special Operations Executive after resourceful landlord and local farmer Bill Spidy warned them the flavour-starved French who drank at his pub were at breaking point.
